Connecticut Couples: Important License Change
Beginning October 1, 2026, Connecticut requires a 48-hour waiting period before a marriage license may be issued.
- Both people must apply in person at the vital records office in the Connecticut town where the ceremony will take place.
- The registrar cannot issue the license sooner than 48 hours after the application.
- The ceremony cannot take place sooner than 48 hours after the application.
- The ceremony must take place no later than 65 days after the license is issued.
- The current Connecticut marriage-license fee is $50. Payment methods and certified-copy fees vary by town.
Example: If you apply on Monday at 10:30 a.m., the registrar cannot issue your license before Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Office hours and pickup procedures could make your actual pickup time later.
Office-hours tip: Connecticut town clerk offices generally operate Monday through Friday and are closed on weekends and municipal or state holidays. Plan to handle your license between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., but verify the exact hours and appointment requirements. Do not arrive at 3:50 p.m. expecting to complete the process.

Rhode Island Couples
Rhode Island’s application location depends on where each person lives. If neither person is a Rhode Island resident, apply in the city or town where the ceremony will take place. Both people must apply together in person. Confirm documents, hours, and fees directly with the clerk.
Certified Marriage Certificate
Ask the clerk how to order a certified copy for future name changes, insurance, or other records. The certified copy is separate from the license fee. After the ceremony, I return the completed license to the proper office for filing.
About Your Rehearsal
If I am running your rehearsal, please tell your venue coordinator that you have hired me to lead it. I include special ceremony details, so I need to direct the rehearsal plan.
In many cases, I can conduct the rehearsal at or near the restaurant where you are having your rehearsal dinner. Please discuss the location and timing with me in advance. Rehearsals must be held within my service area.
If you would like me to join your rehearsal dinner, please invite me ahead of time—I never assume I am included.
